Emie Gravel is a born and bred French Quebecer brought up in the midst of the Canadian changing seasons. After a childhood spent on the rural south shore of Montreal and holidays spent on the Gaspé Peninsula she graduated from her studies in fine arts at Cégep St-Laurent in 2006. The travel bug then caught her and she worked abroad for four years. She worked and lived in England and Australia for a time but it is in Scotland that she truly felt home during those years of constant roaming. She eventually returned to Montreal to study fine arts and art history at Concordia University in 2011. While working on the completion of her bachelor degree, Emie Gravel cofounded the Montreal based Traversières collective with Jacinthe Leblanc. Using photographs she takes herself and those taken by friends, she creates emotional landscapes focused on portraiture. Upon near completion of her Bachelor degree, she works mainly with ideas of the transparency of mediums and surfaces. She also discovered a love for textiles and weaving on the way. Emie’s Inspiration comes from relationships between personality and environment, light plays and scale distortions. This interest in the outdoors and spectacles of nature now brings her back to the Gaspé Peninsula where she plans to establish her practice for the coming years.
